Positive Attitudes

Glass Half Full Picture

I know that it takes all types of personalities to make the world go around, and I can appreciate the realists and the pragmatists. In fact, most days people would probably call me a pragmatist.

But the longer I work with people and businesses, the more I come to appreciate the optimists. Nothing happens, and no one tries anything new, without an optimistic person suggesting it. Somebody has to feel bullish about the idea for it to ever get off the ground. And I appreciate that.

I’ve been the optimist when peers tell me that something isn’t going to work. I understand how hard it is. I know a couple of people (some through work and some personal friends) that somehow manage to stay positive most of the time, despite the day-to-day challenges of their work and their life. Boy do I respect those folks.

So thanks to the optimists out there. I hope you (and I) keep finding the energy to be optimistic.

  1. Hi Jonathan,

Congratulations on joining the blogosphere! I’m excited, and can’t wait to hear more.

As for pragmatism and optimism… I think being generally pragmatic is excellent for business since it ensures leveraging best practices. On the other hand, being ahead of the curve involves change, vision, and risk. I agree, not many people are willing to take the risk, especially if their vision is based on fuzzy ROI numbers.

So, the test becomes to take new technologies and present them in a way that mainstream industry can conceptualize with minimal risk. Really, it’s a big challenge.

    Best,
    Christine

    • Thanks for the comment, Christine. Its funny, this topic is an emotional one for me. I appreciate pragmatism (as an engineer), but I enjoy optimism as a businessperson who wants to see people improve their day-to-day work. I just find positive attitudes so much more energizing.
