Rate of Learning

I feel it is important to keep learning as you age. Its fun, its helpful, and I’m hoping it will keep my mind sharp as I age. But I stand in awe watching how quickly children learn. I was reading a book with my daughter (who is very early in her reading career), and I started noticing how quickly she adapted from word to word. She was willing to make mistakes, she remembered those mistakes, and she leveraged them from one page to the next. And this all came naturally to her. On top of this, she was never inhibited by worrying about getting a word wrong. She tried it, looked for reassurance, and asked for help when she got stuck. I can’t really fathom the pace at which she was/is picking up the nuances of the English language as a result of this.

What if the leading minds of our society could harness this rate of learning when they’re studying cancer or particle physics? Maybe this is why some of the greatest discoveries are made by novices in a field, because they aren’t afraid to fail since they aren’t the “expert”. Interesting food for thought.

  1. I think, it is a lot about practice. If you do it daily, your brain gets trained. This is the same as to blog daily. If you stop for few days, you will have a hard time to continue..

    • @beyondplm – Thanks for the comment, and I’m sorry that moderation is turned on. I thought I turned that off, but I will have to check again.

I agree with you that blogging seems to be about practice. And it definitely isn’t easy.
