I can’t promise that all of these posts are going to be rich with insight. Sometimes, I’m just going to post something so I can remember that I learned it. Like the fact that I learned about the difference between “hone” and “home” today.
So I was starting an email to someone and was talking about how we needed to get down into some specific details, and I started to write how we needed to “hone in” on it. When I thought to myself, “how do you sharpen in on something?” (You know, hone as in “sharpen”, like “honing a knife”.)
Yeah, so I was right to look it up (before saying something silly). The common phrase is supposed to be, “to home in on something,” like a missile “homes in” on its target. The common phrase heard for the word hone is “hone your skills.”
So I learned the difference between two confusing words today, “home” and “hone”. May this quick thought keep you from saying something silly.
